How to Help at Home

We work in partnership with our families and ask parents and carers to support the work we are doing at school. Here are some ideas to help you ensure your child reaches their full potential -

  • Encourage your child to use the toilet and wash their hands by themselves
  • Find their own coat and shoes before coming to Nursery and put them on by themselves
  • If the weather is nice take your child to the park
  • Make some play dough and let your child use plastic knives and scissors to cut it (play dough recipe below)
  • Talk to your child about things you are going to do at home and what lovely things they have done with their friends at Nursery
  • Ask your child to follow simple instructions at home such as ‘Get the knives and forks for dinner please’, ‘Go and find your story book to look at with mummy and daddy’
  • Play a turn taking game with your child such as snakes and ladders
  • Take turns to talk and listen to each other
  • Encourage your child to put their coat on and zip it up by themselves
  • Ask your child to draw pictures and tell you what they have drawn
  • Help your child to use a knife and fork independently
  • Ask your child what things they have done with their friends at Nursery today, listen to your child’s answer and ask them further questions
  • Read stories to your child and sing nursery rhymes together
  • Listen to sounds on your way home from Nursery – what can you hear?
  • Practise counting objects, making sure you touch each one to count it accurately
